Tuesday

It’s a long time since I’ve sat in the departure lounge at Cancún airport, eleven years to be precise, but, just like the last time, I’m on my own and unsure of what lies ahead when I get back to England. The only thing I do know is that this time I’ll be met by Liv rather than Tom.

It’s strange to think how events in Mexico have shaped my life. Back then, it was my forced return home after being attacked with a bottle on a night out. I may never have got to know Tom as anything more than Liv’s big brother if I hadn’t tried to break up a fight in a bar. I shudder. How different my life might have been had fate not taken my hand and led me off down a path that I thought was the right one at the time. I’ve since wondered if I should have spotted warning signs. Maybe I would have done had I not been so young and in love. I managed to put it all behind me and find new happiness in my borrowed life, but then fate stepped in again.

Until I knew about Mia, I’d lain awake at night questioning my decision to write to Liv after the encounter on the beach. The universe had decided to give me a choice. I could still live out my life as Grace with Luis at my side or I could face up to the decision I’d made to run away when things got so unbearable and try to rebuild my relationships with Liv and my parents. I’ve had time to think things through over the past four nights lying alone and sleepless in my bed.

I’m grateful that Liv came back to Mexico to find me. She’s given me a chance, however slim, to be a mother to my child. If I’d started to unlock the memories that are now emerging about Mia in ten years’ time, it might have been too late. It would have been like losing her for a second time. I don’t know if I could have survived that.

Liv wanted me to travel back with her on Sunday after she’d managed to rearrange her flight, but there were a few things I’d needed to organise first, not least breaking the news to Josefina that I was going back to England for a while. Surprisingly, she didn’t ask if Luis was going with me; maybe she just assumed he was.

I suppose I hoped that Luis would reconsider his decision to stay at his mum’s house and come home so that we could discuss the situation we found ourselves in. When he was still a no-show by the time I got home from talking to Josefina at the Pilates studio on Monday afternoon, I knew I would have to take things into my own hands. I didn’t want to talk or break down in tears in front of his mum, so I decided to write him a letter and deliver it, along with Vince, before my taxi to the airport arrived.
